  36. Installed 4.03 today.  Works a lot better.  Still some stuttering with 
  37. heavy effects in sequence, but bearable.  Audio "play from" works again.  
  38. CG works better.  Still a long way to go, but this version is a lot less 
  39. buggy.  Supposedly the format fix will allow Seagate 9 gigs to record on 
  40. the hires mode a little easier.  I find that after recording in hi res, I 
  41. never want to go back to standard mode.  It doesn't take up that much 
  42. more drive storage, maybe 10-15%, but I think it brings the Flyer to 
  43. lossless BetaSP level which is where it needs to be to compete with JPEG 
  44. 4 to 1 compression level quality achieved by Avid AVR27, Media 100, Fast 
  45. etc.  Hi Res Flyer mode is as good as anything shown at NAB including the 
  46. Night Suite Component system setup.  I think it was a crucial move to 
  47. offer this setting even though Drives that will handle it across all 
  48. sectors may not be released for another couple of months.  Everybody who 
  49. sees my footage now cannot believe how clean it is.  Now if we only had a 
  50. timeline to manipulate it.........

  53. PS:  I find that the most highly detailed footage in HiRes5 mode needs 
  54. roughly 150k per frame to store, which is roughly what the Media 100 
  55. needs to record in its 3 to 1 mode.  The advantage to VTASC is that it 
  56. doesn't need that kind of data throughput except in rare cases where shot 
  57. detail is high and is moving (i.e. shimmering leaves on trees).  150k per 
  58. frame translates to 4.5 megs sustained throughput.  I've just been 
  59. testing IBM 4 gig drives that can handle 5.2 megs sustained!  They'll be 
  60. released in a couple of months. So an even higher VTASC quality level 
  61. could be right around the corner.  Newtek needs 8 megs minimum sustained 
  62. to achieve their so called lossless D2, I think we're at least six 
  63. months away from that.
